San Jose City College offers a certificate and Associate in Science degree in Cosmetology. The Cosmetology Program is designed to provide those persons interested in becoming a licensed cosmetologist with instruction in technical and theoretical knowledge relating to the basic skills in all phases of cosmetology including current salon techniques and trends. Emphasis is placed on application of skills in hair coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, hair styling, hair cutting, manicuring, skin care, facials and makeup. Instruction in professionalism, salon management, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, sanitation, Cosmetology Act, rules and regulations are included.

The general Cosmetology program consists of a minimum of 1000 hours of training to provide entry-level skills to students who desire a career in the cosmetology profession. Students will develop expertise in the science and techniques of hair, skin, makeup and lab experience in cosmetology. Upon completion, the student is eligible to take the California State Board examination to become a Licensed Cosmetologist.

The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/ artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry.

SMC’s Cosmetology Department — an exciting place of color, shape, and beauty — offers the education students need to succeed in the cosmetology, skin care, and nail care industries. These well-established programs will prepare students for a career as a platform artist, educator, stylist, colorist, salon owner, sales representative, and makeup artist, as well as offer students the opportunity to work in the television and movie industries, or on cruise ships. This program prepares students to take the State board examination for a cosmetology license.

You’ll learn as much as you want to about cosmetology. You can get the basics and get to work, or you can learn enough to be able to own your own salon.

The BARBER/STYLIST postsecondary instructional program prepares individuals to cut, colour, perm, shampoo, and style hair. Students are also instructed on the proper techniques for facial massaging and shaving. Special attention is given to hygiene, safety, skin, scalp diseases, and equipment sterilization.

We are the only Massage Therapy school in the country with over 100 years of continuous experience educating and training students to become professionally licensed massage therapists.
