This One-Year program in Norwegian Language and Society is a perfect start if you are qualified for and want to continue at one of the Three-Year bachelor's degrees in Engineering or the Two-Year Master's degree program in Integrated Building Technology at the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology in Narvik.

The program is well suited for students who are interested in studying how English is acquired in first and second language settings, as well as how the English language is affected by multilingual situations. Students admitted to the program will be closely integrated into the research group in Language Acquisition, Variation, and Attrition (LAVA), which is an active and productive research group working on various aspects of multilingualism and multilingual language acquisition.

The program comprises courses in English language and linguistics, as well as in British and American literature and culture. Students can specialize in either linguistics or literature, defining their research projects under supervision. We offer courses in both theoretical and experimental linguistics, as well as in early modern and modern literature. 

Globally, English is probably the most important language today. Taking a master’s degree in English will enrich your knowledge of the linguistics, literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world, while conducting independent research in the form of a thesis worth 60 ECTS.

The French Master’s programme aims to give a high level of knowledge in French language, literature and culture. We offer specialised courses in linguistic and literary topics, and provide extensive training in oral and written use of modern French. The supervised master’s thesis allows you to pursue in-depth investigation and analysis within your chosen area of linguistics or literary studies. The Master’s programme also aims to engage you in on-going research at the Department and to help you develop a critical and independent attitude to problems and methods of the subject disciplines.

With a master’s degree in German you get to experience and explore the German speaking countries from within, through their own language and not through translations. Writing a master’s thesis is a research project on a topic you are interested in. Some of our previous master’s projects include: Automatic translation of tourism websites. Spanish Language and Latin American studies will teach you the Spanish Language, but it also seeks to provide you with a better understanding of the historical processes that led to the huge differences we can see between rich and poor in Latin America today.
